Sonny's Sounds Feb 28 2012

Welcome to my first blog. I will be trying to keep you up to date on new music, noteworthy events on the East Coast of Canada, and all the technical nonsense I have been getting up to lately including Ableton, Serato, Resolume Avenue, LightJockey, MYDMX and more.

SpekrFreks
SpekrFreks.com First I would like to share with you a group/DJ outfit that I have been a fan of for quite some time: The SpekrFreks. These guys have been at the forefront of the Electro Sound for years but are also producing some great Progressive House, Dubstep and more. With releases on Play Records (Mellee Fresh and Deadmau5) and Big Fish (Lazy Rich) their Canadian connection is tight. Check them out on Beatport here: SpekrFreks on Beatport.
Bio
SpekrFreks hail from San Francisco. They’ve had radio hits on XM/BPM Satellite and FM Radio. They have also charted on Beatport's Electro House Top 100 and have been featured on Beatport’s Must Hear Electro House series. In 2011 working with Universal Music Group's breakout artists Owl City, and Dev & The Cataracs landed SpekrFreks on UMG’s popular Club Promo Series. They are now remixing more popular artists off of UMG's roster as well as providing soundtrack music for Television and Film. Recently, SpekrFreks debut Dubstep track found it's way on Beatport’s Dubstep Top 100 which lead to their second release finding a spot in the Top 20. There's no end in sight for these two freaks and their speakers.

Serato/Ableton/The Bridge
http://www.ableton.com/thebridge http://serato.com/thebridge Ableton Live has been the backbone of my studio set up since 2005. I started using it in my DJ set up shortly after I moved to Moncton in 2006. It changed the way I view playing music. Mash-ups are a breeze, and learning Midi really opened up the possibilities of my live set. There are an endless number of effect chains and a ton of VSTs that are available to really shape your sound and bridge the gap between Live P.A. and DJing. But after DJing for over a decade on vinyl, I missed the feel and control that you get with vinyl. So when Serato teamed up with Ableton to introduce The Bridge it was a no brainer. And it was everything that I hoped it would be and more! It took me a while to figure out how to implement it into my DJ set up but it's been a trip ever since. Ableton Live is still the backbone of my live DJ rig but having the interface show up right inside Serato makes for endless possibilities and true ease of use. In the future I will be showcasing some of the other elements of my DJ rig and will be digging deeper into Ableton Live. Here are a few videos to get you started: Video 1 Video 2 Video 3 Jazzy Jeff on Ableton Live

A.Skillz in Moncton March 9 at O2!
A few years ago I had the pleasure of seeing A.Skillz perform at the Evolve Festival. I was mesmerized at the way he transitioned seamlessly from one genre to the other. And his scratching skills were simply incredible. Every cut was spot on, the juggling was insane, and the track selection perfect. So when we had the opportunity to present A.Skillz in Moncton at O2, I was very excited. I have always been a fan of his remixes and his "Insane Bangers" series. And it only seemed fitting to have a staple in the Moncton DJ scene, DJ Cyn L, open the show with Opus and Nayles. Tickets are on sale for only $10 at Spin-It and Franks in Moncton. Facebook Event
